As Neurodiversity Week comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting…Not just on our students — but on us as educators, leaders, and schools.
Here’s the truth:
Working with neurodiverse learners, has taught me far more than any training ever could.
It has taught me that:
1. Progress doesn’t always look neat or measurable.
2. Behaviour is often communication, not defiance. Some of our most capable learners are the ones we misunderstand the most.
And 3. Inclusion… is not just about placing a child in a classroom. It’s about whether they actually feel seen, supported, and able to succeed.
And if I’m being honest…We still have work to do.
Because saying we are “inclusive” is easy.
Designing systems, classrooms, and mindsets that truly support every learner?
That’s where the real work comes in..it is hard and uncomfortable, But it is necessary!
As educators, we have to keep asking ourselves:
Are we teaching in ways that reach all learners… or just the ones who learn like we did?
Are we responding to behaviour… or truly understanding it?
Are we focusing only on gaps… or also building on strengths?
Neurodiversity is not a trend. It’s not a checkbox. It’s a call to rethink how we teach, lead, and show up for children.
I’m still learning. Every single day.
I’d love to hear your thoughts: What has neurodiversity taught you as an educator, parent, or leader?
